Scorched Earth

Munich 2020 / Matches on metal / 58 cm x 98 cm

The forests of the Amazon rainforest are on fire. By 2020, 20 percent of the original Amazon had been destroyed by fires and deforestation. Forest destruction in the Amazon will also remain at the highest level in 2021, which can be attributed to Bolsonaro’s policy. The effects on the global climate and biodiversity are devastating. The artist tries to reflect this deeply worrying state in the picture. The work consists of around 20,000 matches, which are representative of some of the trees in the rainforest. The woods have the colors of the Brazilian flag, green, yellow and blue. Some are black, the ones that have already burned down.
The abundance of spent matches is supposed to indicate the precarious situation of the Amazon in Brazil under the Bolsonaro policy.
